Problems with FullScreen in vSphere 4.1

By | September 22, 2010

After we upgraded to vSphere 4.1 we have been expirence problems with VM’s entering FullScreen mode.

The issue is that 9/10 times a VM enter FullScreen mode, you are not able to move the mouse to the bottom part of the screen and select a program or the Start option.

VMware is aware of the bug.
They say that it is resolved  in ESX 5 (next year)  – FullScreen mode should be completely redesigned.

Until then a patch is requested from PR, but no timeframe is released.
So if you have the same problem, please file a support request with VMware to speed up the process.

We saw the same issue with the mouse not tracking correctly when opening the vsphere client in full screen after our upgrade from 4 to 4.1. What we saw was the mouse would not go to the bottom of the screen when in full screen mode. This directly correlated with the amount of screen visible when the console was initially opened. The autofit window option seems to be buggy. Here is my workaround until it is fixed in the next patch release.

When you open your console for the virtual machine, grab the bottom right corner of the console until the entire virtual machine desktop is viewable. I usually take it out until I have a little bit of the black border around the whole virtual machine. Then I go to full screen mode. Your mouse will then track properly on the virtual machine. I have reported this bug to vmware and have been told it will be fixed in the next patch release that hopefully will hit the street in Jan 2011 instead of them waiting til 5 is released.

    Cheers!

    Hi Jen,

thanks for reporting from me too! I thought I was the only one with this problem…

Looking forward to the patch mentioned and will try out the work around. I would be disappointed if VMware would ignore this problem until V5.

    Regards,

We have the same fault, however it only occurs with certain screen resolutions, 1920X1200. I can’t find any reference to this “bug” in the Vmware site.

    Hi guys,
I had the same problem as you guys, till my college advised me to use Window’s remote-desktop-connection instead of the vSphere-client. This tool works fine in full-screen mode. Don’t forget to allow remote-connections of the desktop in the “Remote”-tab of the system-properties on the Vmware machine.
    Good luck
    Bertus
